Planting Taros (种芋头)

   Most people have wonderful childhoods. I have many interesting stories from my childhood.

   One day when I was young, I saw my grandfather putting some taros into the ground. I was very surprised and asked him: “Why do you put them into the ground?” He smiled and said: “If you water them everyday, they will burgeon and grow, and you can reap many taros in the end.” Although I didn’t understand what he meant, I still did as my grandfather said.

   Day by day the taros burgeoned. I was very excited and I wanted them to grow quickly.

   Week by week the taros grew. I was very happy, and said to my grandfather: “The taros have grown. Can we harvest them?” He said: “ You still need to water them everyday. They will grow as long as you insist on doing this. You should be patient in everything you do.”

   Month by month my grandfather took me to see the taros. Finally he told me: “ You have spent four months watering them; now they have grown up. It’s time we harvest them.” We were happy and took the taros back home.

   As years passed, I began to understand the truth. We must work hard in everything we do and be patient. Success does not come easily, nor overnight. Planting taros is just like studying English. You must read and write English everyday. If you do this, you will be good at it in the end.

   No pain, no gain. Let’s work hard!
